A great 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the South Georgia Island region on August 19, 2016, at 0733 UTC (0333 EDT), at a depth of 34 miles, reported the National Tsunami Warning Center, Palmer, AK.

The National Tsunami Warning Center issued a Tsunami Information Statement on August 19, 2016, at 0341 am EDT.

A major 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the South Georgia Island region on August 19, 2016, at 17:33:43 UTC, at a depth of 9 km, reported Geoscience Australia (not finalized).
