A major 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Izu Islands, Japan, on September 20, 2016, at 16:21:16 UTC, reported Geoscience Australia.

674 major (6.0+) to super (8.0+) earthquakes hit various places worldwide over the last 1,309 days. Among these were 82 7.0+ and 6 8.0+ magnitude quakes.
